Finishes we apply
We look at the substrate, the light the room gets and the finish you have in mind, then produce sample boards for approval before a wall is committed.
Polished Venetian plaster
Slaked lime loaded with marble dust and chips, often more than 40% marble powder. One to four thin layers over primer and basecoat, burnished with steel tools to a glass-like sheen.
Marmorino
A coarser lime and marble finish with visible aggregate, closer to honed stone than glass. It suits larger walls where a full polish reads as too much.
Roman clay
A soft, matte troweled finish with cloudy movement and no gloss. It goes on faster and forgives more.
Metallic and pearlescent glazes
Mica and metal-pigmented glazes over a tinted base, worked with brush, rag or trowel, where a wall should shift with the light.
Lacquered and high-gloss walls
Multi-coat lacquer or conversion varnish over a fully skimmed substrate, rubbed between coats. The most demanding finish we offer.
Murals and traditional faux
We also execute murals and traditional faux finishes: strie, ragging, wood graining and stone effects.

Most polished lime work is sealed with paste wax, buffed after cure, which deepens colour and adds water resistance in a powder room or wine cellar. Wax is maintenance, not permanence.

Our process, step by step
Eight stages. The burnishing step cannot be repeated later, so everything before it has to be right.
Substrate assessment
The wall is inspected under raking light. Anything short of a flat level 5 surface is corrected before a finish is quoted.
Skim and sand
Full skim coat, sanded flat, dusted and inspected again.
Primer and basecoat
Tinted bonding primer, then a basecoat close to the final colour, so a thin spot reads as depth rather than a miss.
Sample boards
Two to four boards at full build, viewed in the room at the hour the client uses it.
Layer application
Each layer drawn tight with a spatula or trowel in a random pattern, set, then knocked back.
Burnishing
The final layer is compressed with a clean steel trowel until the surface closes and the sheen comes up.
Sealing
Paste wax, mineral sealer or topcoat, chosen for the room.
Protection and handover
Adjacent trim protected throughout, final inspection, written care instructions.

What Venetian plaster actually is
It is not a paint effect and not a textured coating. It is a thin stone surface on a wall.
The material is old and simple: slaked lime mixed with marble dust and fine chips, often more than 40% marble powder.
The depth comes from application. One to four layers go over a primer and basecoat, each drawn thin with a spatula or trowel and left to set. Because the layers are translucent and unevenly thick, light passes in and reflects back from different depths, which is why a good plaster wall looks like it has weather inside it. The final pass is burnished with steel tools, compressing lime and marble until the surface closes and the sheen approaches glass, then usually sealed with wax. Marmorino uses coarser aggregate and Roman clay stays matte, so one trade covers three results.

Substrate: why level 5 drywall decides the result
A polished surface is a mirror, and a mirror shows the wall behind it.
Every fastener pop, tape edge and roller ridge under the finish shows in raking light once the sheen comes up, and extra plaster does not hide it. This is the most common reason specialty finishes disappoint.
We specify a level 5 finish: a full skim coat over the whole surface, sanded flat, not taped and spotted. On 1920s plaster walls we correct waves and bellies first. On new drywall we do not accept a level 4 handoff, because level 4 is built for flat paint and flat paint forgives what gloss does not. If the budget will not carry the prep, we say so before anyone commits.
Where these finishes belong
Polished plaster earns its cost in specific places. Feature walls and fireplace surrounds. Powder rooms, where a small footprint makes a per-square-foot finish affordable. Entry halls and stair walls that catch changing daylight. Columns, arches, barrel and coved ceilings, where a troweled material follows a curve wallpaper cannot. Wine cellars, where breathable lime suits a cool masonry room better than a film-forming paint.
It is a poor fit in high-traffic corridors, kids' rooms and walls scheduled to carry hanging art. Lime plaster is hard but chips at corners, and repair is a skilled visit.

Most of this work arrives through an interior designer or architect, and it runs on approvals.
We build sample boards on the actual substrate at full layer count and review them in the room, not a shop, because a metallic glaze that reads warm under showroom light can read green against a north window. Nothing goes on a wall before a signed sample. We keep colour and layer records, sequence around cabinetry and millwork trades, and apply the product line your designer specifies.

Frequently asked questions about specialty finishes
How long does Venetian plaster last?
Decades. It is a lime and marble surface, not a paint film, so it does not peel. Wax is refreshed periodically and corner chips are repaired by hand.
Can Venetian plaster go in a bathroom?
Yes, in powder rooms and on bathroom walls outside direct shower spray, sealed with wax or a suitable topcoat. Inside a shower enclosure is a tile question, not a Venetian plaster one.
Does my drywall need to be level 5?
For polished plaster and high-gloss finishes, yes. Gloss magnifies every tape edge and fastener pop, so we quote the skim coat as part of the work.
Can you apply it over existing painted walls?
Usually, over sound paint, after cleaning, any needed skim coat and a bonding primer. Failing or glossy paint is addressed first.
What is the difference between marmorino and Venetian plaster?
Both are lime and marble. Venetian plaster uses finer powder and burnishes to a high polish. Marmorino is coarser and finishes closer to honed stone.
Can it be repaired if it gets damaged?
Yes, by a finisher, blended into the surrounding area. It is not a brush touch-up, which is why we keep layer and colour records.
Do you work directly with our interior designer?
Routinely. We build sample boards to the designer's specification, review them on site under the room's own light, and apply nothing before written approval.
