Doors, drawer fronts, face frames, end panels, toe kicks and crown, all through the same three stages: clean, abrade, coat.
Off-site door spraying
Doors and drawer fronts come off, get numbered, and are sprayed flat in a controlled shop. Flat spraying is why the film lays down without sags.
On-site containment spraying
When doors stay home, we build a sealed containment with filtered air and spray boxes and frames in place.
Hardware, hinge and function changes
Exposed hinges swapped for concealed European cups, pull centers filled and re-drilled, soft-close added.

Coatings, primers and sheens for cabinets
Satin and semi-gloss hold up best on cabinetry because they are washable and they shed grease.

Our process, step by step
Nine stages. Primer over grease fails at month four, not month one, so the degrease is not negotiable.
Test and document
Adhesion checked, thermofoil delamination noted, every elevation photographed. Homes built before 1978 get lead-safe RRP handling.
Degrease
Cabinets carry aerosolized cooking oil, worst above the range. We wash and rinse.
Deglaze and sand
Factory finishes are engineered to repel. Chemical deglossing plus 180 to 220 grit gives primer something to key into.
Remove and number
Doors, drawers and hardware come off, each piece tagged to its opening.
Fill and repair
Dents, old hinge holes, split rails, and on red oak a grain filler pass.
Mask and contain
Counters, appliances, floors and backsplash sealed, air filtered and directed.
Prime and de-nib
Sprayed bonding or stain-blocking primer, then a 320 grit pass.
Topcoat
Two sprayed coats minimum, sanded between. Boxes on site, doors flat.
Cure and reinstall
Doors return once the film is hard enough to take contact. Hardware is set last.

Refinishing, refacing or replacing
When boxes are swollen particle board, paint is money spent on the wrong thing, and we say so.
Refinishing keeps your boxes and doors and changes the colour and film. It suits solid plywood boxes and wood doors in good shape. Refacing keeps boxes, replaces doors and veneers the frames. Replacing starts over. In a 1920s Ocean Park bungalow, refinishing usually returns the most visible change per dollar, because the layout is not the problem.
Substrates: hardwood, MDF, thermofoil and oak grain
Hardwood and plywood take coatings well and sand hard. MDF sprays beautifully, but cut edges drink primer and swell if they ever got wet, so edges are sealed first. Thermofoil is a vinyl skin heat-pressed onto MDF, and it is the one substrate that regularly disqualifies a project. Foil lifting beside a dishwasher will not re-adhere because it was painted. Sound thermofoil can be scuffed and coated with a bonding primer. Red oak has open pores paint will not fill, so you accept a grain-through look or budget the filling passes.
Spraying vs brush and roll
Brush and roll leaves texture. A careful painter keeps it tight, and on a face frame in a small kitchen it is a reasonable lower-cost choice. Spraying atomizes the coating into a film with no stipple, which is what people mean by factory finished. It costs more because the labour sits in masking, containment and door handling, not trigger time. Morning damp off Santa Monica Bay also slows cure and encourages blocking, where two coated surfaces stick together. Shop spraying takes weather out of it.

Living with the project
A typical occupied Santa Monica kitchen runs 4 to 7 days: prep and removal, priming and sanding, topcoats, then reinstall.
You will be without doors for most of that week, so move daily dishes to a staging area first. Coatings keep hardening for two to three weeks after they feel dry, so go easy and hold off on rubber shelf liners.

Will sprayed cabinets chip?
A properly degreased, primed and topcoated cabinet resists chipping well. Conversion varnish and waterborne alkyd films are far harder than wall paint.
What sheen should I choose for cabinets?
Satin for a soft look that still cleans, semi-gloss for maximum washability.
Can you paint thermofoil or laminate cabinets?
Sound thermofoil can be coated with the correct bonding primer. Delaminating foil cannot be repaired by paint.
Do you spray in the house or take doors away?
Both. Off-site spraying gives the smoothest result. On-site containment works when building rules make transport impractical.
When can I put the doors back on?
Once the film is hard, usually several days after the last coat. Full cure continues for a couple of weeks after that.
